Less than 3 months ago Baseball celebrated 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson, today we celebrate 60th anniversary of Lawrence Eugene “Larry” Doby. Born in Camden, South Carolina, Larry was the first black player to enter the American League as Jackie did in National League. He played for the Cleveland Indians as an outfielder from 1947 to 1955 in which he average .273. He had a two year stint with the Chicago White Sox, then one year back in Cleveland. He played one year with the Detroit Tigers and final season back with the White Sox in 1959. In 13 seasons he averaged .283, 1,515 hits, 970 RBI and 253 HR. His defense was flawless, fielding stats of .982 %. In four season he had 1.00 fielding percentage. Larry Doby also played infield (1st, 2nd and Shortstop). Larry Doby died on June 18, 2003, in Montclair, New Jersey, at age 79.
