Byrd captures John Deere Classic

American Jonathan Byrd took advantage of a poor finish by South African Tim Clark to win the John Deere Classic in Illinois by a stroke.

Byrd, 29, was two shots off the lead at the start of the day but had a final round of 66 to finish on 18-under.

The victory gave him the final qualifying place for this week’s Open at Carnoustie.

Clark, who led by three with nine holes left, had a bogey at the par-five 17th and had to be content with second.
