Garcia stoic after title slips by

Open runner-up Sergio Garcia tried to look on the bright side despite missing an eight-foot putt at the 18th to win his first major title at Carnoustie.

“I still don’t know how that putt missed,” said Spaniard Garcia, who then lost a play-off to Padraig Harrington.

“That’s the way it goes. I have to move on and take the positives out of it. I guess it was just not meant to be.

“It’s tough because I don’t feel like I did anything wrong,” added Garcia, who had led for the first three rounds

“I really didn’t miss a shot in the play-off. I hit unbelievable putts. They just didn’t go in,” said the 27-year-old, who lost the play-off by one stroke.

“Every time I get in this position, I never have any room for error. I should write a book on how not to miss a shot and not win a play-off.”

Garcia admitted that his stuttering front nine cost him dearly.

“I was definitely a little bit nervous at the beginning and it’s understandable,” he said.

“If you’re trying to win an Open championship and you’re leading and you’re not nervous, then you must be dead. I definitely struggled on the front nine.”

But the Spaniard was unhappy at the wait he had had to endure on the final tee in regulation play.

“Having to wait 15 minutes in the fairway doesn’t help when you are trying to win the British Open,” he said.

“I guess the first kind of five or seven minutes you couldn’t avoid because the guys in front were putting.

“Then it seemed to take a long time to rake two bunkers.”
