My first gaming console I bought was back in September 1999, remember 9-9-99 ad campaign ? Yes, I’m talking about the Sega Dreamcast – 200 MHz SH-4 with an on-die 128-bit vector graphics engine, built-in modem and interactive memory unit. I had many great memories with my Sega Dreamcast from calling-in sick to play/finish Shenmue, web surfing on dial-up at my aunt’s home, playing Phantasy Star Online and many others. So I’m stoked to read that Sega is planning on releasing a Dreamcast greatest hits type compilation, similar to Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. Story so far…
A NeoGAF forum member posted a screenshot of a gamestop.com page of something called “Dreamcast Collection”, retailing at 29.99 and a release date Feb 15 2011. No other information was shown regarding this collection, i.e games, box art, etc. This page has since been removed from the site. You can view the screenshot at neogaf.com.
Recent interview of Alan Pritchard confirm the validity of a rumor Dreamcast collection. Below is an excerpt of the interview from January issue of Game Informer magazine:
“The Dreamcast fans are very devoted,” said Alan Pritchard, VP of sales and marketing at Sega.
“You see on eBay people are still buying the games and system. We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged. The titles are still to be announced. The Ultimate Genesis Collection did huge numbers on PS3 and 360, so it’s an important part of our business. We’ve already been releasing some Dreamcast games digitally; Crazy Taxi [for one].”
So there you have it, this proves that a retail disc of a Dreamcast collection to arrive sometime next year. I, for one, can’t wait and will purchase it on day one. One sports game that comes to mind and hopefully Sega consider is Virtua Tennis. Let us know of other great Dreamcast title you want included, leave your answer below at the comment section. Thanks.
